A head to head competition to determine the winner of something. Non-American sports will typically determine the league's winner by best overall performance (and so did the US in the past: see the Staley Swindle[1]), but for some reason the US likes to have season performance determine the seeding for an elimination tournament.
I'm a fucking American, which means that the playoffs are the ONLY thing that matters to me, regardless of sport.
