When backpacking in cold weather, white gas stoves are best: isobutane has a boiling point of 32 degrees fahrenheit, so they'll be liquid when the weather is below freezing.
white gas is finicky, and there are both specialized isobutane mixes and special methods (e.g. inverting the canister) to allow it to function in sub-freezing temperatures, but if you know the temperature will be below freezing, use white gas.
